Rothwell / Rialto

£379

The Rialto is a phonostage pre-amp compatible with both moving magnet and low output moving coil cartridges. Discrete transistor circuitry is used throughout for maximum fidelity and lowest noise, and audiophile polypropylene capacitors are used for both the RIAA equalisation and signal coupling.

The Rialto uses a passive circuit to create the RIAA curve (accurate to better than 0.5dB) and employs multiple audiophile grade polypropylene capacitors which not only allows non-standard capacitance values to achieved (to obtain the accuracy in the RIAA curve) but also to act as mutual bypass capacitors, minimising ESR (equivalent series resistance) and maximising audio performance.

The transistors too are audiophile devices, carefully selected for maximum fidelity and minimum noise. Different transistors are used in the moving magnet section of the Rialto and the moving coil section so that both moving coil and moving magnet cartridges are amplified by gain stages optimised for their specific requirements.

Lehmann / Black Cube SE II

£700

The Black Cube SE II comes with top notch technology that points towards higher price points, like all Lehmannaudio electronics.

The input stages used in the this device can also be found in top notch mixing consoles or in well known professional microphone preamps. The entirely passive RIAA equalization network is realized with high precision foil capacitors to realize an artefact-free transport of microdynamics and room information. The switches for gain and load settings have gold plated connectors for reliable performance.

A true audiophile phono stage

The maximum gain of the Black Cube SE II is high enough for even very low output MC cartridges. Cartridge adaption itself is totally flexible because gain and lading can be chosen independently from each other. To top this all off, there is a slot for a custom impedance resistor, so that even the most exotic MC cartridges can be loaded adequately without having to buy expensive impedance plugs. No soldering needed.

Because of the small outer dimensions, the SE II audio section can be placed next to the turntable. This minimizes loss due to cable length.

The Phono One was originally released many years ago and enjoyed much admiration and acclaim during its life-span. After it was discontinued it's popularity did not cease, so when the vinyl hi-fi market began to experience a resurgence, Unison Research decided to re-introduce their iconic phono stage with new and improved specifications.

The new Phono One is aesthetically similar to the original, and while it shares some similarities in circuitry with the Simply Phono it earns its place as Unison Research's flagship phono stage in part because of the 10 triodes it uses (5 x ECC83 (12AX7) valves).

All of the gain stages now implement a parallel configuration for the best low-noise and low-distortion performance. This solution also increases the overall cartridge gain ability to approximately 54dB; easily enough for a wide variety of Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges. The same passive RIAA network as found in the original Phono One has been adopted, but with specially selected components that ensure strict tolerances to the equalization curve.

A delayed muting function is built into the phono stage to avoid potential problems with DC voltages and 'bump' (or 'pops') during warm-up and switch-off; this also means you won't hear any music until the valves are running at their optimum temperature, so the sound performance is always the best it can be.

£1900

Pro-Ject / Phono Box DS+

£349

The Phono Box DS+ is an all-new, ultra-low-noise phono preamplifier that benefits from outstanding circuit technology. It is also the first affordable phono stage to allow for quick and easy setup via a high-quality display panel. The Phono Box DS+ does away with the need for fiddly dipswitches or jumpers by putting all setup options onto a screen, with all adjustments made by an intuitive set of buttons on the unit.

This new member of the iconic Phono Box range offers exceptional performance and maximum flexibility for almost any MM or MC Cartridge available, making the DS+ an instant market leader considering its attractive price.

The Phono Box DS+ comes with carefully selected amplifier modules as well as audiophile-grade polypropylene capacitors, which guarantee a warm analogue sound, a rich soundstage and a hugely involving performance.
