Acoustic Energy / 305

£1000

With the Reference Series we’ve sought to improve upon every aspect of current speaker design to create a true, balanced, dynamic, wide-bandwidth and minimal colouration loudspeaker.

Cabinet: Constrained laminate layer construction for maximum resonance damping. A specially designed 7mm MDF/3mm high density rubber/5mm MDF sandwich material is used throughout the cabinet enclosure to minimise resonance and external cabinet noise.

Bass Drivers: Twin long-throw motor assembly drivers for maximum linear accuracy and control. The motor system comprising twin-wound aluminium voice-coils is thermally bonded to the aluminium cone for absolute minimum distortion and long-throw pistonic accuracy.

Mid Driver: Huge underhung motor assembly for maximum linear accuracy and control. The motor system comprising twin-wound aluminium voice-coils is thermally bonded to the aluminium cone for absolute minimum distortion and long-throw pistonic accuracy.

Tweeter: The now well-established Vifa Ring-radiator tweeter is used here in our own custom, upgraded specification. Coupled to our DXT® Lens assembly for improved in-room response and dispersion matching to the bass driver, this is one of the finest tweeters in use today.

These features wrapped into a compact, elegant floorstanding design and luxuriously finished with real piano ebony lacquer mark the new Reference Series as the pinnacle of current loudspeaker design.

Opera / Callas

£4000

The Callas is both an object of affection and something that integrates discreetly into any environment. Made from MDF and veneered curved plywood, the cabinet is thick enough (25mm on the sides and 50mm on the front panel) to absorb resonances and shaped with a non-parallel footprint to reduce internal reflections. The use of additional internal damping - including two layers (20cm total thickness) of pyramidal polyurethane foam - in sensible quantities helps keep the cabinet non-resonant while still allowing the speaker drivers to deliver their full sound.

The Callas' impressive bass-response is delivered via the 7" long-throw woofer from SEAS, with and annealed polypropylene diaphragm. The woofer is from SEAS' flagship 'Excel' range and is reflex-loaded with a rear duct. Due to the broad range this woofer can potentially delivery (up to 5kHz), the woofer is capable of delivering a perfectly natural overlap with the tweeter at the 2kHz crossover point.

The 9700 tweeter from Scanspeak used within the Callas is one of the finest tweeters available. And not only does it sound phenomenal, but it is also incredibly reliable - offering a long life expectancy.

The crossover employed in the Callas uses premium components, including Mundorf capacitors and MOX resistors. The 2,000Hz cross-over frequency is only possible because the 9700 tweeter can deliver such a broad frequency response and offers such a wide linear displacement. The crossover has a low-pass section of the second order for the woofer and a high-pass section of the second order for the tweeter.

The Callas is equipped with a switch that allows you to adjust the output of the vocal range (+2 dB between 300 and 3000 Hz). This greatly increases the flexibility of the diffuser and also suits the speaker to a greater number of environmental situations .

The Callas produces a sound stage that expands in three dimensions with an excellent impulse response and power, dynamics and extension at low frequencies typical of systems of much higher dimensions. This speaker is also suitable for "near field" listening (up to one meter to the listening point) without any loss of clarity or quality.

Opera / Grand Mezza

£2200

While designed in the same style as Opera's most affordable loudspeakers, the Mezza, the Grand Mezza is far from an "entry level" speaker system. Opera worked to produce a quality speaker that's suitable for normal home use with low- or medium-power amplifiers starting from 10-12 watts RMS, such as the sister company, Unison Research's, range of valve amplifiers. Though designed with Unison Research valve amplifiers in mind, the Grand Mezza are also easily capable of handling more powerful amplifiers (up to over 200W RMS per-channel), provided the amplifier is of good quality and is protected against excessive clipping.

This latest version of the Opera Grand Mezza was released in 2012, and compared to the previous 2007 model it has been completely revamped. It is a floorstanding three-way column speaker that is reflex-loaded. There are two 5" long-throw SEAS woofers with polypropylene cones and a 5” SEAS midrange driver with a cone made from double-treated paper. The tweeter, by Scanspeak, is the same as those used on the more expensive Seconda and Quinta models (originally released in 2011).

The Opera Grand Mezza is a comprehensive and versatile speaker system suitable for the most demanding musical programs, but it can also be easily used in sophisticated home theatre systems.
